Why percentage rather than pounds
Clinical trials report weight change as a percentage of starting weight, because a fixed number of pounds means something different at different starting points. Converting your own figures to a percentage is what makes them comparable to published results.
For context on the scale involved: in SURMOUNT-1, mean reduction was about 15.0% at 5 mg, 19.5% at 10 mg and 20.9% at 15 mg over 72 weeks, against 3.1% with placebo. Those are group means in a trial population under structured supervision.
What a trial mean does not tell you
A 20.9% mean contains people who lost substantially more and people who lost very little. Trial populations meet specific eligibility criteria and receive structured support that most people do not have. An average describes what happened to a group; it does not predict what will happen to any individual, and it is not a target.
